Component mapping and lifecycle

Stable identity, parent-child relationships, replacement and history.

What it covers

  • Device names can change; mapping uses serial, WWN, PCI path, vendor/model and other identifiers.
  • Parent-child: controller → physical disk → logical volume → filesystem → mount point.
  • Lifecycle states: discovered, active, review, degraded, service, replacement-candidate, replaced, retired.
  • The replacement flow links old/new components to a service case and validation.

How to use it

  1. Open the old component.
  2. Create/link a service case.
  3. Record planned replacement.
  4. Refresh after change.
  5. Link the new ID.
  6. Validate/accept.
  7. Retire the old one.

Important rules

  • Do not delete the old component.
  • A controller fault can explain many child symptoms.
  • A lifecycle change requires reason/evidence.
