IMAP and external mail clients

Connecting a client, folders, Seen/Unread, search and limitations.

Purpose

IMAP allows a supported desktop or mobile mail client to work with a DES mailbox. The server remains the source of truth for folders, messages, UID values, Seen/Unread and flags.

Configuration

The administrator supplies hostname, port, TLS mode and login format. Do not disable TLS validation or accept an unknown certificate without verification.

Synchronisation

Changing Seen/Unread or a flag in the client is stored in DES. During a conflict, refresh the folder and verify that the client is not showing only an offline copy. Search may depend on the server-side index and current UID set.

Limitations

IMAP does not provide administration. Domains, mailboxes, sharing, licence and mail flow are managed through WEB/Admin. For a problem, check account state and the IMAP service first, then authentication and mailbox permissions.
