System model: System, Owner and Domain
How DES separates the platform, organisations, domains and data.
Management levels
DES uses a clear separation:
| Level | Purpose |
|---|---|
| System | The complete DES installation, global settings, modules, mail flow and infrastructure |
| Owner | The organisation or customer managing one or more domains |
| Domain | A specific mail domain, its users, mailboxes, rules and policies |
A System Administrator manages the platform. An Owner Administrator manages resources belonging to their organisation. A Domain Administrator manages only the assigned domain. An end user works with their own mailbox and explicitly shared resources.
Data isolation
The domain is a boundary for users, addresses and policies. This allows one DES installation to serve more than one organisation without mixing data. When granting permissions, always verify which Owner and Domain contains the object.
Standalone operation and Nextera
DES can operate independently. When connected to Nextera, plans, limits and desired state may be centrally managed, while operational mail data remains owned by DES. During a connection outage, DES continues with the last valid local state according to the active mode.
