SMTP, LMTP and Edge delivery
The role of gateway ingress, internal LMTP delivery and protected Edge exchange.
SMTP
The SMTP gateway accepts or sends messages according to domain, policy, licence and security controls. The public SMTP endpoint should be protected by Digi Wall and correct DNS records, while mail decisions remain inside DES.
LMTP
LMTP is used for controlled internal delivery to mailbox storage. During a problem, verify that the gateway accepted the message and that LMTP returned success for the specific recipient.
Edge
An Edge component may enqueue inbound mail or claim outbound records using a protected token. The token is stored in Settings and must not be exposed. During rotation, synchronise both sides and test on a limited path.
Diagnostics
Distinguish network failure, authentication or token failure, policy rejection and mailbox delivery failure. They require different actions and must not all be treated with requeue.
